England, Birmingham, Villa Park

On Monday, 31 August, one of the most intriguing matches of the second Premier League round will take place as Aston Villa host Arsenal at Villa Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 UK time and 22:00 for Ukrainian fans.

For Villa, this will be their first home match of the new league campaign, and the mood around the team is far from positive after the opening round. The Birmingham side were thrashed 4-0 away by Brighton. The defeat was particularly painful given the major squad rebuild during the summer. Unai Emery lost several important players, including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Ezri Konsa, who, incidentally, now plays for Arsenal.

On top of that, Villa lost João Gomes to a red card in the opening round. As of 27 August, his involvement against Arsenal remains in doubt due to suspension, while the situation surrounding Ollie Watkins remains another major talking point amid reports of a possible move to Saudi Arabia.

Arsenal, meanwhile, began the defence of their league title exactly as reigning champions should. In the opening round, Mikel Arteta's side comfortably beat Premier League newcomers Coventry 3-0. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Ødegaard were on the scoresheet. The Londoners controlled the match and gave their opponents virtually no opportunities to create danger.

Even before the start of the league season, the Gunners had won the Community Shield, thrashing Manchester City 3-0. New signing Christos Tzolis has already made an impressive early impact, while Arsenal strengthened significantly during the summer, including the signings of Bruno Guimarães and Ezri Konsa.

However, there is one thing that should make Arteta cautious. Last season, Aston Villa already beat Arsenal 2-1 at Villa Park. Moreover, the Birmingham side know how to turn this stadium into an uncomfortable place for the Londoners. So the reigning champions should certainly not expect an easy afternoon. Villa's official website has already recalled that dramatic victory, when Emiliano Buendía scored the decisive goal.

In terms of squad quality, Arsenal look stronger. Saka and Havertz remain the main threats in attack, while Ødegaard and Declan Rice are key figures in midfield. Tzolis is also a player worth watching closely: the Greek impressed in his debut match and could become one of the standout discoveries of the early season.

Overall, it is a fantastic fixture with a straightforward storyline: Aston Villa need to bounce back after their 4-0 defeat and prove that last season's fourth-place Premier League finish was no fluke. Arsenal, meanwhile, travel to Birmingham looking for a second consecutive victory and eager to show their rivals immediately that they have no intention of surrendering the title.

On paper, the favourite is obvious — Arsenal. But if Villa score early and build momentum, Villa Park could once again become a real trap for the Londoners.

My prediction: both teams will score – yes.

Probable line-ups:

  • Aston Villa: Bizot, Cash, Torres, Lindelöf, Maatsen, Barkley, Kamara, McGinn, Bogarde, Hemmings, Buendía
  • Arsenal: Raya, Calafiori, Magalhães, Mosquera, White, Lewis-Skelly, Rice, Ødegaard, Tzolis, Havertz, Saka
