Typically, the host nation for a World Cup is chosen by vote during a FIFA Congress, sometimes requiring multiple rounds. However, for the 2030 and 2034 tournaments, FIFA appears ready to take a different approach.
Details: According to Dutch Football Association Secretary General Gijs de Jong interview to Volkskrant, FIFA intends to simply ratify the bids from Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay as hosts for the 2030 World Cup, and Saudi Arabia for the 2034 World Cup, at the upcoming Congress on December 11, without conducting a vote. Saudi Arabia’s bid, as the sole proposal for 2034, has sparked criticism, but FIFA insists no procedural rules were broken.
Reminder: Under FIFA's host rotation policy, only federations from Asia or Oceania were eligible to bid for the 2034 tournament. South America could have been in contention but was ruled out due to its involvement in hosting three matches for the 2030 tournament, effectively excluding South American federations from the 2034 bid.
