According to Pedri, this transfer would significantly strengthen Barcelona for the new season:

"I absolutely love Julián Álvarez. I hope he joins Barcelona, I hope the deal happens.
He is among the best players, and we want only the best at Barça," he told RTVE.

The situation around Álvarez's departure from Atlético escalated after it became known that Barcelona's management was secretly negotiating with Álvarez behind Atlético's back. It even got to the point where Atlético filed a complaint with FIFA against Barcelona.
