Hugo Broos describes his relationship with Bafana Bafana players as ‘unique’ after guiding the side to a historic World Cup knockout stage.

Bafana won 1-0 against South Korea earlier this morning at Estadio Monterrey to secure a last-32 knockout stage match, for the first time in the country's history, against co-hosts Canada on Sunday.

Broos said his understanding with the player is similar to that of a father and son after Thapelo Maseko netted for the South Africans in the second half.

“The guys were working and fighting for every ball because they also wanted to be in the second round,” said Broos after the game.

“The combination between me as a coach and them as players is something unique. I’m the coach, and a friend. The relationship between me and the players is very good.

“I wanted to make a very good World Cup of this one, to end in beauty — and also for the guys. We started this journey five years ago. I’m so happy we achieved the next round.”
