Steven Gerrard could soon make his return to coaching in England.
Details: According to journalist Graeme Bailey, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has emerged as one of the top contenders for the Middlesbrough managerial position. The club is searching for a replacement for Rob Edwards, who unexpectedly left the team to take charge of Wolverhampton.
Since departing Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January 2025, Gerrard has remained out of work, but now appears ready to return to management. Middlesbrough president Steve Gibson has long been an admirer of Gerrard and considers him the ideal candidate to lead the club into a new era.
"Steven is highly valued by the Middlesbrough board. He boasts an impressive résumé, and his appointment would be a huge coup for the club, though it remains to be seen whether both parties can agree on financial terms," said Graeme Bailey.
Alongside Gerrard, Middlesbrough’s shortlist also includes Alex Neil, Tony Mowbray, Paul Heckingbottom, Gary O’Neil, former Liverpool striker Robbie Keane, and Mark Robins.
Gerrard previously managed Aston Villa in England, as well as Scottish side Rangers and Saudi club Al-Ettifaq.
Reminder: Rob Edwards has officially signed a contract with Wolverhampton.
