The Bundesliga Matchday 3 clash between Hoffenheim and VfB Stuttgart will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the SNP Arena in Sinsheim, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30 CEST. The opening two rounds have already exposed a common theme: both teams can create plenty in attack, but neither has found defensive stability. Hoffenheim have lost 3-2 twice, while Stuttgart followed a 5-1 defeat at Bayern with a 4-1 victory over Köln. That is 20 goals across their four Bundesliga matches combined.

Hoffenheim: the attack is working, but Ilzer's team cannot close games

Christian Ilzer remains in charge after leading Hoffenheim to fifth place last season, when they missed the Champions League places by only one point. Yet the new campaign has started badly in terms of results. Hoffenheim first lost 3-2 away to Köln and then suffered exactly the same scoreline at home against Borussia Dortmund.

The Dortmund defeat was particularly painful. Leon Avdullahu and Tim Lemperle put Hoffenheim 2-0 ahead, and the hosts were the better side for roughly an hour before conceding three times in the final half-hour. It was another demonstration of Hoffenheim's ability to play aggressively and create chances, but also of the defensive problems that appear when the match becomes stretched.

The underlying numbers support the same picture. Hoffenheim have already generated 3.14 xG in two Bundesliga matches and scored four times, but they have also conceded six. Fisnik Asllani has been dealing with a knee problem, while Alexander Prass is also sidelined by a muscular issue. Andrej Kramarić, meanwhile, has returned following surgery and came off the bench against Dortmund, although he is still working his way back towards full match fitness.

Stuttgart: an emphatic response after the Munich collapse

Sebastian Hoeneß's team were heavily punished in their opener at Bayern, losing 5-1 despite producing several promising attacking spells. Their response against Köln was far more convincing: Stuttgart won 4-1, registered 22 shots and ten corners, and had four different scorers in Bilal El Khannouss, Grischa Prömel, Ermedin Demirović and Josha Vagnoman.

Stuttgart have produced 4.15 xG through the opening two rounds, which is an encouraging attacking number, but six conceded goals underline that they are hardly secure at the other end. Deniz Undav, El Khannouss and Chris Führich give Hoeneß plenty of creativity between the lines, while Demirović remains another major attacking option.

There are still personnel issues. Tiago Tomás is out with a muscular injury, while Dennis Seimen, Dan-Axel Zagadou, Nikolas Nartey and Justin Diehl are among the other unavailable players. Luca Jaquez and Lorenz Assignon have also been recovering from injuries. Führich, however, has returned and started the victory over Köln.

Possible lineups

Based on the teams' latest Bundesliga selections:

  • Hoffenheim: Baumann – Coufal, Kabak, Hajdari, Rots – Avdullahu, Burger – Wimmer, Daghim – Lemperle, Hložek.
  • VfB Stuttgart: Bredlow – Vagnoman, Jeltsch, Chabot, Mittelstädt – Stiller, Prömel – Führich, El Khannouss – Undav, Pejčinović.

Match facts and head-to-head

  • Both Hoffenheim Bundesliga matches this season have ended in 3-2 defeats.
  • Stuttgart's first two league games produced scorelines of 1-5 and 4-1.
  • Both teams have scored in all four Bundesliga matches involving these clubs this season.
  • Hoffenheim and Stuttgart have already conceded six league goals each.
  • Their most recent head-to-head meeting in May ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw.
  • Four of the last five meetings have finished level, with Stuttgart winning the other one.

Another high-scoring game looks more likely than a tactical battle

Choosing a winner is considerably more difficult than trusting the goals. Hoffenheim have scored twice in both league games and even built a two-goal advantage against Dortmund, but Ilzer's side have repeatedly struggled once opponents have increased the pressure. Stuttgart arrive with greater attacking depth and fresh confidence after scoring four against Köln, yet their own defensive record remains far from convincing.

Most importantly, every Bundesliga game involving either side this season has produced at least five goals. Their current attacking numbers are stronger than their defensive performances, and the latest meeting in Sinsheim also developed into a six-goal thriller. With both teams comfortable playing at a high tempo and neither showing an ability to control games without conceding chances, another open contest is the most attractive scenario.

Prediction: Over 3.5 goals.
