Oh no! Liverpool's €145m newcomer injured in the Champions League
Liverpool have been hit by an alarming injury blow on their Champions League opening night.
Details: Bradley Barcola was forced off during Liverpool's Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid at Anfield. The French winger suddenly pulled up, went to ground and was seen holding his left calf, making it clear that he was unable to continue.
Víctor Muñoz was introduced as Barcola left the pitch. The incident is particularly frustrating for Liverpool because this was the Frenchman's first start for the club after his high-profile summer move from Paris Saint-Germain.
The exact nature and severity of the problem have not yet been confirmed, so Liverpool will now have to await a medical assessment before learning whether the winger is facing any spell on the sidelines. The fact that Barcola immediately grabbed the calf area will nevertheless be a concern for Andoni Iraola and his staff.
Barcola had already threatened Atletico before his withdrawal and missed a major opportunity shortly before the injury. His early exit therefore became another unwanted development for Liverpool in a demanding European opener.
It is worth noting that AS reported Liverpool's deal for Barcola at €145 million including the fixed fee and variables. Before tonight's match, the 23-year-old had played only 26 Premier League minutes for Liverpool after making his debut from the bench against Ipswich.
