Anfield has once again turned into Marcos Llorente’s favorite Champions League stage.

Details: The Atletico Madrid player found the net against Liverpool in the opening round of the 2026/27 Champions League league phase, reaching a major personal milestone. It was Llorente’s tenth goal in the competition — and remarkably, five of those ten have now come against the Merseyside club.

Llorente already had a remarkable record at Anfield before the latest meeting. In March 2020, he came off the bench and scored twice as Atletico knocked Liverpool, then the reigning European champions, out of the Champions League after extra time.

The Spaniard returned to the same stadium in September 2025 and struck another brace. Atletico lost that match 3-2 after Virgil van Dijk’s late winner, but Llorente once again demonstrated his unusual ability to deliver against Liverpool.

Before the latest clash, Llorente had nine Champions League goals in his career, four of them scored against Liverpool at Anfield. His newest strike therefore takes his overall tally to ten and his Liverpool tally to five — exactly half of all his goals in the competition.
