The buildup to the highly anticipated Premier League Matchweek 31 clash between Newcastle and Sunderland was marred by an outbreak of violence right outside the stadium walls.
Details: The Tyne-Wear derby, always known for its fierce intensity, erupted into open clashes between fans even before the opening whistle. According to journalist Craig Hope, brutal scuffles broke out on the approaches to St James' Park, catching both police and ordinary passersby off guard.
The situation took a critical turn when one of the brawlers was left in extremely serious condition. Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the injured supporter was unconscious. Paramedics had to perform CPR right there on the pavement, in full view of a shocked crowd, before urgently transporting the man to hospital.
At this moment, the condition of the injured fan remains unknown.
As for the football itself, the match is already underway, but the score remains goalless.
Reminder: Manchester United have advanced in negotiations to sign Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães for £70 million.
