In the 57th minute of a tense Champions League semi-final second leg against London’s Arsenal, Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez etched his name into club history.
Details: By confidently converting a penalty, Alvarez made it 1-1. With that, he reached the milestone of 10 goals and, according to Opta, joined the ranks of the club’s all-time great goalscorers.
Alvarez has become only the second player in Atletico Madrid’s history to score at least ten goals in a single season of a major European competition. Until now, the only footballer to achieve such a feat was Radamel Falcao, who netted 12 goals in the 2011/12 Europa League campaign.
This goal not only brought Atletico back into the contest after a controversial first-half penalty, but also cemented Alvarez’s status as one of the most clinical forwards in the modern era of the competition.
Reminder: A controversial penalty put Arsenal ahead in the Champions League semi-final.
