The 2026/27 Champions League final will be played at the Estadio Metropolitano on Saturday, June 5, 2027, as confirmed by UEFA.
Villa's words carry extra weight because of who is saying them. The 44-year-old returned to Atlético in March 2026 as a member of the board of directors after the Apollo Sports Capital takeover was ratified, and he remains one of the most beloved figures in the club's modern history. In his single season as a player at the club, 2013/14, he helped Diego Simeone's side win La Liga and reach the Champions League final in Lisbon, where Real Madrid snatched a heartbreaking 4:1 win after extra time. Two years later Atlético lost another final to the same rival, this time on penalties in Milan, so the dream of a first European Cup is deeply personal for everyone around the Metropolitano. The venue itself will stage its second Champions League final in 2027, having hosted the 2019 decider in which Liverpool beat Tottenham 2:0, and the stadium will celebrate its tenth anniversary that same year. Madrid will become a six-time host of the European Cup final, with only London staging more. Notably, the final was originally awarded to San Siro before UEFA withdrew those rights, and the Metropolitano eventually won the race against Baku's Olympic Stadium.
The timing of the statement is symbolic: today in Monaco the draw for the 2026/27 league phase takes place, and Atlético will learn their opponents on the road they hope ends at their own ground. It's worth noting that Villa knows exactly what it takes to lift the trophy: he won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2011 and scored in the final against Manchester United at Wembley.
