Matteo Guendouzi turned Fenerbahçe's Champions League celebration into one of the wildest scenes of the night.

After the final whistle, midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, who previously played for Lyon's fierce rivals Marseille, began celebrating provocatively in front of the home supporters. His gestures and continued taunting quickly raised the tension, and Lyon players approached the Frenchman before a mass confrontation involving footballers and staff from both sides broke out.

The confrontation appeared to calm down briefly, but the drama continued as Guendouzi headed towards the tunnel. The midfielder kept interacting with the Lyon crowd, while an individual wearing Lyon colours attempted to kick him near the exit from the pitch. That incident immediately triggered another scuffle involving representatives of both teams.

Speaking after the match, Guendouzi explained that his reaction followed repeated insults directed at his family by Lyon supporters.

If 60,000 people are insulting your family, your mother, your children before the match even starts, and no one — not the referees or any other officials in the stadium — says a word... In France, when things like this happen, they would talk to the fans and tell them to stop, or else the match would be halted. But here, for more than 90 minutes, including during warm-ups, they insulted my family, my wife, my children. It was a situation that really got to me, that deeply affected me. For me, it was complete disrespect. And on top of that, if we can't even celebrate the way we want, to me that's total injustice — it's truly heartbreaking, Guendouzi said.

Fenerbahçe ultimately had the final word on the pitch: goals from Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown secured the Turkish club's 2-1 victory, while Malick Fofana scored Lyon's only goal. It is worth noting that UEFA lists Guendouzi with five appearances and 450 minutes played in the 2026/27 Champions League campaign, with no goals or assists.
