The fierce battle against betting among professional athletes and referees in Turkey continues.
Details: According to Marca, the Turkish Football Federation has charged more than 1,000 footballers as part of an ongoing investigation into players and referees involved in gambling. Among those accused are two players from Galatasaray and Beşiktaş, one from Trabzonspor, as well as 27 players from other Turkish Super Lig clubs.
It has also been reported that every one of the top 10 Turkish clubs has at least one player under suspicion.
The scale of the problem is so immense that the second and third division championships have been suspended, as teams simply could not field enough players to participate in matches. The Turkish Football Federation has already reached out to FIFA, requesting permission for lower-league clubs to sign players outside the regular transfer window.
Earlier investigations resulted in 149 referees being sanctioned, and more than 40 match delegates have resigned.
