Portugal, Amadora, Estadio Jose Gomes

On Thursday, September 10, Estrela da Amadora will host Braga at Estádio José Gomes in a rescheduled Matchday 3 fixture of the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Both teams approach the meeting unbeaten in the championship: Estrela have six points from four matches, while Braga have collected seven from three.

Estrela Amadora: goals at both ends have become the norm

Pepa's team have been one of the most entertaining sides at the start of the Portuguese season. Estrela opened with a 2-2 draw against Sporting, repeated the same score away to Alverca, then secured their first victory by beating Nacional 3-2. Last weekend brought yet another 2-2 draw, this time against Famalicão.

The pattern is remarkable: Estrela have scored at least twice in all four league matches, but they have also conceded exactly two goals in each of them. Their aggregate score is already 9-8, which says plenty about Pepa's attacking approach and the defensive risks that come with it.

Leandro Antonetti has been the main attacking reference. His equaliser against Famalicão meant that the striker had found the net in four consecutive league matches. Max Scholze also scored in that game, while Ianis Stoica, Abraham Marcus and Lovro Zvonarek continue to give Pepa several options behind the centre-forward.

There was also positive news regarding availability: Estrela's latest official medical bulletin reported no players sidelined through injury before the Famalicão match. The squad was further strengthened at the end of the transfer window by the arrivals of Jeremy Arevalo, Vuk Pavicevic, Mitongo and Rodrigo Dudok.

Braga: Pau Víctor provides the cutting edge

Braga have also made an unbeaten start under Carlos Vicens. After drawing 2-2 away to Moreirense, the Arsenalistas defeated Vitória Guimarães 1-0 and followed that with a 2-1 comeback victory at Alverca. They therefore arrive in Amadora with consecutive league wins.

The latest victory was particularly encouraging. Braga trailed at half-time but Pau Víctor struck twice after the break to turn the match around. Vicens' side finished with 68% possession and six shots on target, once again showing their ability to control long spells of a game even away from home.

Braga's squad situation is less straightforward. Bright Arrey-Mbi, Jean-Baptiste Gorby, Ricardo Horta and Sikou Niakaté were all unavailable for the trip to Alverca. In their absence, Vicens started with Gustaf Lagerbielke, Vítor Carvalho and Adrian Bajrami in defence, while João Moutinho and Demir Tıknaz controlled midfield and Mario Dorgeles, Pau Víctor and Diego Rodrigues formed the front three.

Match facts and head-to-head record

  • Estrela have scored at least two goals in each of their four Primeira Liga matches this season.
  • Both teams have scored in all four of Estrela's league games.
  • Braga have scored in each of their three league fixtures.
  • Braga are unbeaten in the last five meetings with Estrela, recording two wins and three draws.
  • Both meetings last season were high-scoring draws: 3-3 in Amadora and 2-2 in Braga.

Both unbeaten, but another open Estrela match looks likely: Estrela Amadora vs Braga prediction

Braga have the stronger squad and arrive after two consecutive league victories, so an away win would not be surprising. However, Estrela's performances suggest that backing one side may be less attractive than focusing on the way Pepa's team are playing.

Estrela have scored freely against every opponent so far, including Sporting, and Antonetti is in excellent form. At the same time, their defensive structure continues to give opponents opportunities: conceding twice in four consecutive league matches is difficult to ignore.

Braga possess enough attacking quality to exploit those spaces, particularly with Pau Víctor coming off a decisive brace. But keeping Estrela scoreless at José Gomes looks equally difficult. With both of last season's meetings also producing goals at both ends, another exchange of goals is the most logical scenario.
