World record fee! Manchester United face outrageous price to replace Carrick with Brighton boss
Manchester United's search for a potential Michael Carrick replacement has hit an enormous obstacle! Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler could cost the struggling giants a world record compensation fee, making his appointment far more complicated than expected.
Details: According to The Telegraph, Hürzeler's contract with Brighton contains no release clause. The 33-year-old German signed a new agreement in May 2026, keeping him at the Amex Stadium until June 2029. Any club hoping to recruit him would therefore need to negotiate directly with Brighton. The Seagulls could demand a fee exceeding the existing managerial compensation record of approximately £21.7 million. However, no official asking price has been announced.
United's interest comes during an increasingly serious crisis. Carrick's side suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League and have now gone seven matches without a victory. The poor results have intensified speculation about a change of manager.
Brighton, meanwhile, have enjoyed an outstanding start under Hürzeler and sit third in the Premier League. The club have no desire to lose their coach, especially with Champions League qualification becoming a realistic ambition.
There is another major complication for United. Reports suggest Hürzeler is happy at Brighton and is not interested in taking over at Old Trafford. Even if United were prepared to pay a record fee, they would still need to convince the German to leave his current project.
It's worth noting that Bayern Munich paid around £21.7 million to appoint Julian Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig in 2021. Brighton could reportedly seek more for Hürzeler, although no negotiations or formal United approach have been confirmed.
Reminder: Two Premier League giants circle Brighton's young coaching genius.
