On Thursday, October 22, 2026, Celtic will host Celta Vigo at Celtic Park in the third round of the UEFA Europa League league phase. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 local time. Both clubs have lost their opening two European matches, which already gives this encounter major importance in the battle to stay in contention for the knockout rounds.

Celtic: a seven-goal response after another painful European night

Martin O'Neill's side could hardly have produced a stronger reaction to their 4-1 defeat against Benfica. On Sunday, Celtic demolished Hearts 7-1 at Celtic Park, with Benjamin Nygren and Callum Osmand scoring twice each, while Kieran Tierney and Camilo Durán also found the net. The victory sent Celtic four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership and, just as importantly, restored confidence before another European night in Glasgow.

Europe has been a completely different story. Celtic opened the league phase with a 3-1 home defeat against Ferencváros before losing 4-1 away to Benfica. That leaves O'Neill's team without a point after two rounds, with two goals scored and seven conceded. Against Benfica, Celtic still created 14 attempts and seven shots on target, but their defensive mistakes made the match almost impossible to rescue.

The attacking picture is much more encouraging. Durán has now scored in consecutive matches, Nygren impressed against Hearts, and Osmand's two-goal performance gives O'Neill another dangerous option on the left. Osmand was withdrawn at half-time with a hamstring concern, but the substitution was precautionary and O'Neill expects him to be available for Thursday. Cameron Carter-Vickers, however, is set to miss the Celta match, while Yang remains a few weeks away from returning.

Celtic therefore have every reason to attack. After dropping all six available points in Europe, another home defeat would leave them in an extremely difficult position. The 7-1 win over Hearts should encourage O'Neill to maintain the aggressive approach that produced so much movement and pace in the final third.

Celta Vigo: two defeats in Europe, but Giráldez's team arrive with renewed confidence

Celta's European campaign has started in a similarly disappointing fashion. Claudio Giráldez's team first lost 1-0 away to Omonia before suffering a dramatic 2-1 home defeat against Juventus. Hugo Álvarez gave Celta the lead against the Italian side, but Juventus equalised after the break and Randal Kolo Muani scored the winner in stoppage time. Celta therefore also have zero points after two rounds, with one goal scored and three conceded.

However, the Galician side also responded positively at the weekend. Celta beat Alavés 2-1 at Balaídos, with Ferran Jutglà opening the scoring before Javi Rodríguez doubled the advantage. Giráldez's substitutions improved the team significantly after half-time, while goalkeeper Andrei Radu produced several important late saves to protect the victory.

Personnel problems remain an important factor. In Celta's latest squad announcement, Carl Starfelt, Borja Iglesias, Miguel Román, Pablo Durán and Jones El-Abdellaoui were all unavailable because of injuries. That reduces Giráldez's options, especially in attack, although Jutglà, Hugo Álvarez, Williot Swedberg, Couhaib Driouech and the experienced Iago Aspas still provide enough quality to threaten Celtic's defence.

Celta are generally more comfortable when they can move the ball through midfield and attack spaces rather than being forced into a purely defensive role. That could suit them at Celtic Park, where the hosts will be under pressure to take the initiative from the opening minutes.

Possible lineups

  • Celtic: Sinisalo – Donovan, Murray, Trusty, Tierney – McGregor, Baur, Nygren – Hassan, Durán, Osmand.
  • Celta Vigo: Radu – Javi Rodríguez, Yoel Lago, Marcos Alonso – Javi Rueda, Moriba, Febas, Carreira – Hugo Álvarez, Jutglà, Swedberg.

The selections are based on the teams used in Celtic's recent matches against Benfica and Hearts and Celta's Europa League meeting with Juventus, with Carter-Vickers unavailable and Osmand expected to recover in time.

Match facts and head-to-head record

  • Celtic have conceded seven goals in their opening two Europa League matches.
  • Both of Celtic's Europa League matches this season have produced at least four goals.
  • Celta have also lost both of their opening Europa League fixtures.
  • Celtic scored seven goals in their latest home match, while Celta have scored in each of their last two competitive games.
  • The clubs have met twice before, in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup. Celtic won 1-0 in Glasgow before losing 2-1 in Vigo and progressing on away goals.
  • That European run eventually took Celtic all the way to the UEFA Cup final.

Neither side can afford another passive European performance: Celtic vs Celta Vigo prediction

The tournament situation should have a major influence on the way this game develops. Both Celtic and Celta have zero points after two rounds, so simply trying to protect a draw would do little to improve either club's position. At some stage, both teams will have to take risks.

Celtic should carry considerable attacking confidence into the match after scoring seven against Hearts. Durán is in good form, Nygren is arriving in dangerous positions from midfield, and O'Neill now has several different options on the wings. At the same time, Celtic's European defending has been far less convincing: Ferencváros scored three times at Celtic Park and Benfica added another four in Lisbon.

Celta are unlikely to dominate possession for long periods in Glasgow, but they do not need to. Giráldez's side have players capable of attacking the spaces Celtic leave behind, and goals against Juventus and Alavés in their last two matches show that the Galicians can create problems even without several injured attacking players.

Celtic's home intensity should give them enough opportunities to score, but trusting their defence to keep Celta quiet looks much more difficult. With both teams desperate to finally put points on the board, a match in which each side finds the net looks like the most attractive scenario.
