RIP. Legendary Wolverhampton captain Mike Bailey passes away
English football has suffered an irreplaceable loss.
Details: Legendary Wolverhampton captain and former England international midfielder Mike Bailey has died at the age of 84. The cause of death was complications from dementia, a condition the former footballer had battled since 2017.
Mike Bailey played for Wolverhampton for 11 years—between 1966 and 1977. The midfielder made 436 appearances for the club and scored 25 goals. In 1967, he helped the Wolves secure promotion to the top flight and was named Midlands Player of the Year.
In 1972, Bailey led the team to the UEFA Cup final, and in March 1974, as captain, he guided Wolverhampton to victory in the English League Cup final, defeating Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.
After hanging up his boots following spells at Minnesota Kicks and Hereford United, Bailey went on to manage Charlton Athletic, Brighton, Hereford United, and Greek side OFI, and for many years led the Wolverhampton Former Players Association.
It is worth noting that on the international stage, Mike Bailey made two appearances for the England national team.
