Tragedy at the Volta a Portugal: 19-year-old Briton Finlay Tarling dies in crash

British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died at the age of 19 following a serious crash during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal.

Details: The incident occurred on Friday during the 166.8-kilometer Melgaço-Fafe stage. According to initial reports, a vehicle was involved in the crash on the course; it was later clarified that the rider was struck by a van. Tarling rode for the Swiss NSN Development Team, previously trained at the Israel-Premier Tech academy, and was considered one of the most promising Welsh cyclists of his generation, especially as a time trial specialist.

The race organizers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation confirmed the athlete's death, after which the stage was neutralized to the finish in Fafe, and the podium ceremony was canceled as a mark of respect. The team released a heartbreaking statement: “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling. Fin was a beloved member of our team, but above all, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to many. He will be deeply missed.”
