NPFL: Rivers United Face Suspended ₦15m Fine and Points Deduction Over Broadcast Dispute
The Euromatch NPFL has officially handed Rivers United a suspended fine of ₦15 million, alongside a three-point and three-goal deduction, for denying the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) broadcast partners access to their stadium during their Matchday 11 fixture against Rangers International on Sunday.
The Port Harcourt encounter, played on Sunday, ended in a 1-1 draw, but the incident has now attracted disciplinary action from the league.
In a decision signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Ayo Abdulrahman, Rivers United were handed a suspended ₦15 million fine, as well as a three-point and three-goal deduction.
”The EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has received reports of the Club’s action in denying the League’s Broadcast Partners access to its stadium for the live coverage of its home fixture,” Abdulrahman noted in the signed letter.
The league explained that the club’s actions interfered with its commercial and broadcasting arrangements while also damaging the competition’s integrity and reputation.
However, the sanctions will not be enforced immediately. Instead, the NPFL has placed Rivers United on a formal and final warning, with the penalties set to take effect only if the club commits a similar breach again during the ongoing season.
