The controversy erupted in the 55th minute, when Manchester United winger Matheus Cunha netted a goal to make it 2-1. However, it later emerged that match referee Michael Salisbury should have disallowed the goal due to a handball by a Red Devils player. Salisbury failed to fully review the incident and allowed the goal to stand—a decision that proved pivotal in the outcome.
At the final whistle, the scoreboard read 3-1 in favor of the hosts. Frustrated Nottingham Forest representatives rushed to appeal to the referee, but their protests fell on deaf ears.
