DR Congo managed to defeat Nigeria in the World Cup 2026 qualification play-offs and secured a place in the intercontinental play-off this spring. However, Nigeria have now lodged a complaint that could prevent DR Congo from competing further.
Details: According to Arise News, a major scandal could soon unfold, as the Nigerian national team are preparing a complaint against DR Congo over an allegedly ineligible squad. The issue concerns a potential violation of regulations related to citizenship changes involving nine DR Congo players. All nine featured against Nigeria.
Nigerian officials are convinced that the legal and administrative procedures were not completed in time. They also point out that DR Congo’s constitution prohibits dual citizenship, while many of these players allegedly did not renounce the nationality of their country of origin or the country they previously represented.
Among the players reportedly affected by the alleged violation are Tuanzebe (England), Masuaku (France), Wan-Bissaka (England), and Sadiki (Belgium).
DR Congo defeated Nigeria in a penalty shootout in the CAF qualification final. In March, they are set to face the winner of the Jamaica vs New Caledonia tie.
Reminder: The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) issued an apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the federal government, and millions of football-loving Nigerians after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
