The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued an open and heartfelt apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, and millions of football-loving Nigerians after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement released on Monday, the NFF expressed deep regret to President Tinubu and the nation’s passionate supporters, acknowledging the disappointment felt across the country. The Federation emphasized that the players and technical crew fully understand the expectations Nigerians place on the Super Eagles and the emotional investment fans make each time the national team competes.

According to the Federation, the mood in the dressing room after the defeat was one of overwhelming sadness, with many players too heartbroken to speak. The NFF noted that the pain of the loss was felt not just by the fans but equally by the team members who carried the weight of the nation on their shoulders.

In its message, the NFF made a solemn promise to Nigerians:

“We will rebuild trust. We will restore pride.
We will reclaim our standing on the global stage. We will not allow this disappointment to be the final word on Nigerian football.”

The Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup were dashed on Sunday following a tense 4–3 penalty shootout defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo. With their World Cup campaign now over, the team will now turn its full attention to the upcoming AFCON tournament.
