2026 World Cup Qualifiers Playoffs: Troost-Ekong Speaks Ahead of Sunday’s Crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Playoff
Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has expressed confidence and determination as Nigeria prepares for Sunday’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff clash against DR Congo. The experienced centre-back, who remains one of the team’s vocal leaders, emphasized that the players are fully motivated and understand the magnitude of the task before them.
Troost-Ekong made it clear that the opportunity to reach the World Cup is all the motivation the squad needs.
“We are happy to be here competing for Sunday; there’s no other motivation that we need if you want to go to the World Cup. It’s going to be a difficult game. Congo did well to get to the final and we are looking forward to it.”
The defender acknowledged the quality of Congo’s side, highlighting that their journey to this stage proves their strength and resilience.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s previous match, Ekong praised his teammates for handling Gabon’s counter-attacking threat while insisting that Congo pose a very different challenge.
“Every game brings a new challenge and I think also for Gabon, they were very dangerous on the counter which the boys dealt really well with. But with Congo, I know one or two players in the team. I know they are a good playing side, so it’s going to be a different challenge altogether.”
Eric Chelle’s side will aim to secure a place in the intercontinental playoffs when they face the Leopards in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs in Rabat on Sunday.
