Scandal! World Cup star leaves national team because of the coach

A major conflict has erupted inside the Morocco national team.

Details: Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat has announced that he will not continue with the national team under current head coach Mohamed Ouahbi. The experienced midfielder made his position clear with a short but explosive statement:

“Under this coach, I’m not gonna continue.”

Amrabat’s words immediately put his relationship with Ouahbi back in the spotlight. The current Morocco coach took charge of the Atlas Lions in March 2026, replacing Walid Regragui, and Amrabat remained part of the squad during the World Cup.

Tension surrounding the midfielder’s role had already emerged after the tournament. Moroccan reports previously indicated that Amrabat was unhappy with his reduced playing time, while Ouahbi publicly insisted there was no personal conflict and described the midfielder as a player who always wants to be on the pitch.

The latest statement, however, leaves little room for interpretation regarding Amrabat’s immediate international future: as long as Ouahbi remains in charge, the midfielder does not intend to continue playing for Morocco.

It is worth noting that Amrabat currently plays for Ajax after joining the Amsterdam club as a free agent in August 2026. He was also one of Morocco’s key players at the 2022 World Cup, featuring in all seven matches as the Atlas Lions became the first African national team to reach the tournament’s semi-finals.
