For the first time in Gold Cup history, Guatemala broke their own “curse” against Jamaica—and did so convincingly. Óscar Santis' goal was enough to down the Reggae Boyz in a fiercely contested match that signaled the debut for both teams, and even Jamaica’s head coach, Steve McClaren, had to tip his hat to the winners.

“It was a huge difference compared to our 3–0 win in Kingston,” McClaren admitted. “We expected a response, and Guatemala certainly delivered.” He credited the home crowd for energizing the players. “With the fans behind them, they fought like lions. You could see their desire to win.”

The British manager highlighted the moment that turned the match: “We switched off for a second, failed to deal with a basic ball, and they punished us. It was always going to be tough after that.” Despite applying pressure late on, Jamaica couldn’t break through a resolute Guatemalan defense.

McClaren praised Guatemala’s aggressive mentality and collective spirit: “They played like underdogs and fought like madmen. That attitude made the difference more than tactics.”

He also acknowledged the rising level of football across Central America, pointing to the passionate crowds in Honduras, Nicaragua, and now Guatemala. “There are no easy games in this confederation anymore. Every team is well-coached and hungry,” he concluded.
