"They Played With Their Hearts": Tena Praises Guatemala After Historic Win Over Jamaica

Guatemala made history in the 2025 Gold Cup by defeating Jamaica 1–0, their first-ever victory against the Caribbean powerhouse in the tournament. After the final whistle in Carson, California, head coach Luis Fernando Tena was visibly moved, hailing the performance and spirit of his players: “Our boys played with their hearts in front. They gave everything for every ball.”
Tena emphasized the collective effort and the role of Guatemalan fans in the stands. “The support from our people was vital. Seeing how the team fought together, the solidarity—it was incredibly emotional,” he said.
Facing a Jamaica side with 14 players currently in England, Guatemala relied on tactical discipline. “We knew their strength and size, so we played low and fast, pressing hard. The players executed it brilliantly,” Tena explained.
He also praised the growth of his squad and the integration of young talent. “We’re building with promising players, especially in attack. That gives us optimism. It’s key to start a short tournament with a win, but even more important is how the team played—defending with heart and attacking with intent.”
Looking ahead to the clash with Panama, Tena acknowledged the challenge. “They’re the best team in Central America, with many players in Europe. But we’re improving and believe we can compete with anyone.”
For Tena, the true value of the win lies in the identity shown on the pitch: unity, sacrifice, and pride. It was more than a result—it was a statement that Guatemala is ready to fight for more in this Gold Cup.
