Leeds vs Brentford Prediction: Can the Hosts Maintain Their Perfect Start?

England, Leeds, Elland Road

On 30 August, Leeds will host Brentford at Elland Road in the second round of the Premier League. Kick-off is at 14:00 UK time. Both teams began the campaign with victories, so this promises to be a fascinating test of their ambitions — particularly for the hosts, who clearly have no desire to find themselves involved in another relegation battle after last season.

Leeds made a highly pragmatic start to the campaign. Away at Nottingham Forest, Daniel Farke’s side struggled to break the deadlock for most of the match, but in the 88th minute Anton Stach scored a superb free-kick to secure all three points. Their defence was also almost flawless, with Forest managing just two shots on target. Leeds then beat Nottingham again, this time 2-0 in the League Cup. As a result, the team have recorded two wins and two clean sheets in their competitive matches so far this season.

The biggest change over the summer has been the club’s extensive work on the squad. Goalkeeper James Trafford, defenders Tarik Muharemović and Nico Elvedi, as well as experienced winger Harry Wilson, have all arrived. Trafford has already repaid the faith shown in him, keeping clean sheets in both of his first two competitive appearances for Leeds. Another player to watch is Stach. His goal secured victory on the opening weekend, while set pieces could become a major weapon for the hosts.

But Brentford certainly have not travelled to Yorkshire to make up the numbers. The Bees put on a real show in their opening game, thrashing Tottenham 3-0 at home. Keith Andrews’ side did more than simply take their chances — they registered 26 shots against their opponents. Brentford followed that up by destroying Birmingham City 6-1 in the League Cup. Nine goals in two competitive matches speak for themselves.

The battle between the two attacks will be particularly intriguing. Igor Thiago is one of Brentford’s main attacking threats, while Vitaly Janelt has already scored against Tottenham and created several other dangerous opportunities. Leeds, meanwhile, have Dominic Calvert-Lewin leading the line, with Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson operating behind him. Both teams are also dangerous from set pieces: Leeds scored 22 goals from set pieces and penalties last season, while Brentford have traditionally posed a major threat from crosses and corners.

There is also some interesting head-to-head history. The last three Premier League meetings between Leeds and Brentford have ended in draws. Their most recent encounter at Elland Road in March finished 0-0. Moreover, Brentford have not won away at Leeds since 2015, when they secured a 1-0 victory in the Championship.

In terms of team news, Leeds could be without Gabriel Gudmundsson and Ilia Gruev, while Mateo Joseph and Wilfried Gnonto are already among the injured players. Brentford will be without Antoni Milambo and Sepp van den Berg. Farke is expected to stick with his familiar 3-4-2-1 formation and largely the same starting XI that defeated Forest.

On paper, this looks like a very evenly matched contest. Leeds will have the huge advantage of home support, while Brentford currently look stronger in attack. At the same time, the hosts have already shown that they know how to stay patient and wait for their opportunity.
