After missing a penalty in the Nations League final, Spanish striker Álvaro Morata has faced a barrage of criticism and even death threats.
Details: Morata’s missed penalty proved to be the decisive moment in the final showdown between Portugal and Spain. It was this crucial error that allowed Roberto Martínez’s side to overcome La Furia Roja and take the trophy back to Portugal.
The incident unleashed a wave of fury among Spanish fans — anger rained down on the 32-year-old forward. Morata began receiving death threats, both in the comments under his Instagram posts and directly in private messages.
The situation escalated to the point that his wife, Alice Campello, had to step in and defend her husband:
Do you realize that this is just a football match? Thank God there are still good people out there, and we are very grateful for your messages.
In life, we all make mistakes. Life is made up of lessons, experiences, good and bad moments for everyone, but we can’t judge others.
Football is exactly that, and I think that’s its beauty… it’s so exciting and unpredictable… It’s a sport and entertainment, so we should give it the importance it deserves. I’d love to see the lives of all those people who criticize a mistake, to see how perfectly they do everything and what they have achieved in life… Please, show some respect and stop being so cruel," she wrote on her Instagram.
