Kenya’s Sports Minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, is hopeful that the country will be ready in time to help host the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), as required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). After visiting the places where the games will happen, Murkomen said that a lot of progress has been made and that Kenya is on the right path to meet CAF’s rules.

Murkomen explained, “We are working hard to get Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium ready for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).” He also praised the work being done, saying that the builders are focused on finishing everything on time.

“The progress reassures me that we are on track to meet the deadlines set by CAF,” Murkomen added. “The workers are going above and beyond to ensure these facilities are ready for both tournaments, all for the pride of our nation.”

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has already arrived in Kenya to assess the facilities firsthand and meet with Kenyan President William Ruto. His visit is aimed at ensuring all necessary infrastructure for hosting the tournament is in place.

A statement from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed Motsepe’s arrival, with FKF President Hussein Mohammed welcoming him at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

“The government, in collaboration with FKF, is working tirelessly to ensure that the infrastructure for hosting the tournament is completed on time and that our clubs and national teams will benefit from these quality facilities long after the tournament ends,” the statement read.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will co-host the eighth edition of the CHAN tournament in 2024, making it the first time this has happened. Only players that compete in their respective national league tournaments will be included in the event, which is scheduled to take place from February 1 to February 28, 2025. After Rwanda in 2016 and Sudan in 2011, the CECAFA Zone will host the CHAN competition for the third time.
