Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has officially confirmed that FIFA has rejected Iran’s request to move its 2026 World Cup group-stage matches from the United States to Mexico. The Iranian Football Federation expressed serious concerns over the safety of its players and fans due to tense diplomatic relations between Tehran and Washington.
Details: Despite Mexico’s willingness to host the matches, FIFA cited “logistical obstacles” that make it impossible to change the venues on such short notice.
The controversy arose amid statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that Iran’s participation in the tournament on American soil could be unsafe for the Iranians themselves.
However, following a meeting with representatives of the Iranian national team in Turkey, Gianni Infantino took a firm stance: the matches will proceed strictly according to the schedule established by the draw.
The FIFA president emphasized that he personally spoke with the coaches and players, and at this stage, the organization sees no compelling reasons for an urgent change of venues.
Reminder: A legendary coach has taken charge of the Ghana national team.
