The owner of Italian side Napoli, Aurelio De Laurentiis, has once again stirred the football community with his bold statements.
Details: De Laurentiis is seriously concerned that today's youth are losing interest in traditional football due to its lack of dynamism. To bring them back to the screens, De Laurentiis suggested abandoning the conventional match format, arguing that the game should be shorter, tougher, and more spectacular.
The Napoli president's main idea is to reduce the halves from 45 to 25 minutes. According to De Laurentiis, this would force teams to play with more intensity.
He also proposed to completely eradicate diving: any player caught "acting" on the pitch should immediately leave the field. Changes would also affect the disciplinary system—Aurelio advocates abolishing yellow and red cards. Instead, he suggests introducing temporary suspensions of 5 or 20 minutes, similar to ice hockey or rugby.
De Laurentiis insists that football needs more goals to truly entertain the fans, so the rules should be revised in favor of attacking play.
"We need more spectacle, otherwise we'll lose our audience for good," claims the Napoli boss.
Reminder: Enzo Maresca is the leading candidate for the position of Napoli head coach.
