On Friday, December 5, the Azzurri learned their potential opponents for the group stage of the 2026 World Cup finals. If Italy succeeds in the playoff qualifiers, they will play in Group B against Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar.
According to Materazzi, this is the easiest group they could have drawn, but now Italy's main task is to actually qualify for the tournament. The 2006 World Cup champion highlighted Canada as the most dangerous rival, since the team will be playing at home: the pressure and support from the stands could be decisive.
He also warned not to underestimate Qatar, who, in his opinion, are capable of springing a surprise as they aim to give their all for the fans. Materazzi paid special attention to Switzerland—the team that knocked Italy out of Euro 2024. He acknowledged the quality of their play, but sees a potential matchup as a chance for revenge.
The legendary defender emphasized: despite a favorable draw, Italy must first get through the playoffs—in March, the team will face Northern Ireland, then the winner of the Wales vs Bosnia and Herzegovina matchup. It's worth noting that Italy missed the last two World Cups in 2018 and 2022.
