The Matchday 23 clash in Serie A between Lazio and Genoa will be remembered not only for the Romans' dramatic 3-2 victory, but also for an unprecedented protest action.
Details: About 30,000 season ticket holders deliberately stayed away from the Olimpico Stadium, leaving the stands virtually empty in protest against club president Claudio Lotito's policies.
The reason for this drastic measure was a long-running conflict between the fans and the club's management. The supporters, led by the Curva Nord ultras, are dissatisfied with the club's lack of ambition, transfer restrictions, and recent scandals, including leaked private phone conversations involving Lotito. Tensions escalated after the club released an official statement calling the boycott calls unacceptable, which the fans perceived as an insult to their constitutional rights.
The atmosphere at the stadium was surreal: instead of the usual roar, the Olimpico greeted the teams with silence. Before leaving the stadium in an organized fashion, fans unfurled a banner with a harsh message aimed at the president, emphasizing that mere survival without dreams is no longer acceptable to them.
Despite the oppressive silence, Maurizio Sarri's men managed to snatch victory in the 90+10th minute thanks to a penalty converted by Danilo Cataldi.
Reminder: Daniele Maldini has officially joined Lazio.
