On Wednesday, September 9, Norwich City welcome Birmingham City to Carrow Road in the sixth round of the EFL Championship. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:45 BST. Philippe Clement's side have already demonstrated how dangerous they can be at home, but their opening weeks have lacked consistency, while Chris Davies' Birmingham have made a much steadier start to the new campaign.
Norwich: one explosive victory has not solved the consistency problem
Norwich entered the season with ambitions of pushing much closer to the promotion places after finishing ninth last term, but their first four Championship matches produced only one victory. The Canaries lost 2-1 at home to West Brom, were beaten 3-0 by Millwall and then responded brilliantly with a 4-1 victory over Burnley before suffering another 1-0 defeat at Stoke. The Burnley game showed the attacking ceiling of Clement's team. Mohamed Touré and Andre Brooks both scored twice, with Norwich attacking directly and punishing mistakes efficiently. However, Norwich have also failed to score in both of their league away matches, and turning promising passages of football into consistent results remains their main issue.
There has at least been some positive squad news. Paris Maghoma has returned to training and Clement confirmed he is available for selection again. Jovon Makama has also resumed team training, although the coaching staff are taking a more cautious approach with the forward after his lengthy absence. Lucien Mahovo, Ali Ahmed and Mirko Topić remain among the players dealing with injuries.
Birmingham: an unbeaten start built on greater stability
Birmingham have started their Championship campaign with considerably more consistency. Davies' team drew 0-0 away to Sheffield United, 2-2 with Bristol City, won 2-1 at Wrexham and then shared the points with Southampton in a 1-1 draw. Six points from four matches without a defeat is a solid foundation, particularly as the Blues have already avoided defeat in both of their league away fixtures.
Their draw with Southampton was also more encouraging than the scoreline alone suggests. Birmingham produced 16 attempts despite spending considerably less time in possession, Jay Stansfield found promising positions and August Priske equalised with a header. Patrick Roberts and Carlos Vicente provide creativity around Stansfield and Priske, while centre-back Phil Neumann gives the Blues an additional aerial threat from set pieces.
Davies does have some personnel concerns. Marc Leonard is recovering from a hamstring injury, while Demarai Gray is currently listed with a shoulder problem. Neither started against Southampton, meaning Birmingham should still be able to retain the core of the side that has kept them unbeaten in the Championship.

Their recent record against Norwich is another factor: Birmingham defeated the Canaries twice last season, including at Carrow Road.
