Norwich: Clement finally saw the attacking performance he wanted
Norwich's start to the Championship has been inconsistent, but Saturday's 3-1 victory away to Sheffield United was a significant step forward. Anthony Musaba opened the scoring, Mohamed Touré restored the lead before half-time and substitute Mathias Kvistgaarden added a third after the break. Philippe Clement's team produced 19 shots, eight of them on target, and controlled 54% of possession at Bramall Lane.
That result was particularly important because Norwich had lost three of their previous four league matches. Their attacking potential had already appeared in the 4-1 home victory over Burnley, but the Canaries then failed to score in a 1-0 defeat at Stoke. The Sheffield performance showed a much better balance: Clement's side progressed the ball through pressure confidently and had several different players capable of threatening the opposition goal.
The competition in attack has also increased. Touré scored at Bramall Lane, Musaba was dangerous from the left, Andre Brooks created problems between the lines, while Kvistgaarden needed only a few minutes after coming on to find the net. Birmingham: unbeaten start built on stability
Birmingham's first four Championship matches produced one victory and three draws. They started with a goalless draw away to Sheffield United, shared the points with Bristol City, won 2-1 at Wrexham and then drew 1-1 with Southampton. Five goals scored is not an exceptional return, but the Blues have already demonstrated an ability to remain competitive even when games become difficult.
Chris Davies has relied on a relatively settled structure. James Beadle has established himself in goal, while Bright Osayi-Samuel, Phil Neumann, Christoph Klarer and Alex Cochrane have formed the preferred defensive unit. Tomoki Iwata has provided balance in midfield, and further forward Birmingham can call on Jay Stansfield, Patrick Roberts, Carlos Vicente and August Priske.
Stansfield's movement between midfield and attack is particularly important. Birmingham do not need to dominate possession to create danger: they are comfortable attacking quickly after regaining the ball and have enough pace in the wide areas to punish a defence that leaves space behind its full-backs.
The visitors have also had some injury issues. Lee Buchanan, Marc Leonard and Max Bird were unavailable in the latest squad update, although Davies still has enough depth to keep the core of his starting eleven stable.
