Official: Euro 2020 winner Belotti drops to Serie B and signs for Modena
From Euro 2020 champion to Serie B in five years: Andrea Belotti has officially become a Modena player.
Details: Modena announced the 32 year old striker's arrival on a free transfer, with a one year contract reported. Il Gallo had been without a club all summer after leaving Cagliari, and now drops to the second tier for the first time since 2015, when he fired Palermo to promotion.
The move completes a winding road for one of Italy's most recognizable strikers. Belotti was once the most feared No 9 in Serie A, scoring 26 league goals for Torino in 2016-17 and earning a place in Italy's Euro 2020 winning squad. Since leaving Torino in 2022, though, the goals dried up across spells at Roma, Fiorentina, Como, Benfica and Cagliari, and this summer passed without a single top-flight suitor. Modena, hunting promotion from Serie B, offer him a stage and a leading role again, and for a proud club with top-flight history, landing a former Italy international is a genuine statement of intent.
It's worth noting that Belotti scored over 100 Serie A goals for Torino and captained the club for years, so Serie B defenses have been warned: the rooster may crow again.
