The Copa del Rey final found itself at the heart of a major scandal even before the opening whistle. Police launched a large-scale operation that resulted in the detention of dozens of supporters.
According to Mundo Deportivo, law enforcement began inspections as fans were still approaching the city. Interceptions took place on the A-4 motorway near La Carlota, as well as on other routes traveled by supporters.
During the searches, police seized an impressive cache of weapons: knives, batons, chains, balaclavas, more than a hundred steel rods, and dozens of metal pipes. Additionally, brass knuckles, pepper spray, signal flares, helmets, and motorcycle gloves were discovered.
In total, around 160 individuals were identified and detained, most of whom, according to authorities, are linked to supporter groups from both clubs. Police emphasized that the averted clashes could have led to serious consequences.
