Samuel Eto’o Outlines Vision for Cameroonian and African Football

Samuel Eto'o discussed his goals for Cameroonian football as well as his larger vision for the growth of African football during his visit to Canal+ Sport's Talents d'Afrique.
Eto’o’s Commitment to Football Leadership
Since retiring from professional football, the former Barcelona and Chelsea star has been dedicated to transforming local football in Cameroon. Elected as president of FECAFOOT in 2021, he has spent the last four years implementing structural changes to improve the sport in his homeland.
“I have always wanted to serve football. I earned my coaching diplomas in Spain to understand a coach’s perspective, but my goal was never to coach—it was to lead and contribute to Cameroonian and African football,” Eto’o revealed.
Preferring Federation Leadership Over Politics
Eto’o dismissed any aspirations of entering politics, preferring his current role where he has direct influence on football’s growth.
“People dream of becoming ministers, but as a minister, you are restricted. You need permissions to travel, for example. I prefer to remain the president of the federation,” he stated.
A Larger Role in African Football
Recently appointed to the CAF Executive Committee, Eto’o now carries additional responsibility beyond Cameroon. His new role allows him to advocate for the development and global recognition of African football on a broader scale.
