Major shake-ups are brewing within India's national cricket team.
Details: According to IndiaToday, Shreyas Iyer has become the leading contender to take over the T20I captaincy for the upcoming series against Ireland and England. Iyer’s appointment would signal the start of a long-term leadership overhaul, as selectors seek a captain who can guide the team through the next two T20I World Cups.
This move effectively puts an end to Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy tenure, despite leading India to a world championship title in March. The BCCI’s bold decision is rooted in concerns over Yadav’s form: in the recent IPL 2026 season, he managed a modest 270 runs in 13 matches for Mumbai Indians. Before making a final call, the board will consult with head coach Gautam Gambhir, but experts agree that this is likely just delaying the inevitable.
The leadership race has turned into a three-way contest. Iyer’s main rivals are Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan. Should Iyer officially take charge, it’s expected that one of the Varma-Kishan duo will be named his vice-captain.
Reminder: The "Impact Player" rule could be scrapped as early as next season.
