Now Courtois shoulders responsibility for the club's future.
Details: Today it was announced that 31-year-old Real Madrid and Belgium national team goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has officially become an investor in Belgian side Genk.
This move carries real symbolism, given that Courtois began his career at Genk.
"I feel energy and ambition within me. This investment feels like coming home," Courtois said.
Courtois and NXTPLAY are making long-term investments in KRC Genk. This commitment marks the first step in a broader capital increase program that will further strengthen the club in the coming years and could bring in up to 60 million euros.
A Genk academy product, Courtois left the team in 2011 to join Chelsea in London. He made 45 appearances for Genk, conceding 49 goals and keeping 14 clean sheets.
Reminder: The Belgian football association is mired in debt and disbands national teams. What's behind the crisis?
