Mostafa Shobeir joins an exclusive circle of legendary World Cup goalkeepers
By saving two penalties (excluding shoot-outs) during the 2026 World Cup, the Egyptian goalkeeper has become one of the few goalkeepers to achieve such a feat in a single edition of the tournament.
Mostafa Shobeir has left his mark on the World Cup being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Although Egypt were knocked out in the round of 16 on Tuesday 7 July, the goalkeeper has etched his name into the competition’s history books.
He saved two penalties during the 2026 World Cup. The first was against Iran (1–1) in the group stage and the second against Argentina (3–2) in the round of 16. He has thus become the fourth goalkeeper in World Cup history to achieve such a feat in a single edition of the competition.
Thanks to this feat, Mostafa Shobeir joins a prestigious circle of legendary goalkeepers who had managed to achieve the same feat a few years ago. They are Jan Tomaszewski (1974), Brad Friedel (2002) and Wojciech Szczęsny (2022).
