Here we go! River Plate legend takes charge of Ecuador until 2030

Ecuador have landed one of South America's most decorated coaches: Marcelo Gallardo is the new man in charge of La Tri.

Details: Fabrizio Romano gives the here we go: El Muñeco has signed a long term contract running until the 2030 World Cup, with the mission of leading Ecuador into the next major tournaments. He replaces fellow Argentine Sebastian Beccacece, who stepped down after the round of 32 exit to Mexico at this summer's World Cup.

The appointment ends a courtship that stretched back years: Gallardo famously turned Ecuador down in 2024 for family reasons, but talks led by FEF president Francisco Egas finally convinced the 50 year old, out of work since leaving River Plate in February. His CV needs little introduction, two Copa Libertadores titles and a decade of glory at River made him one of the most sought after managers on the continent. He inherits a promising group that finished second in CONMEBOL qualifying behind Argentina and stunned Germany at the World Cup, and his first squad announcement is expected in the coming FIFA window as the road to 2030 begins.

It's worth noting that this will be Gallardo's first ever job in international management after a coaching career spent entirely at club level with Nacional and River Plate.
