The year 2025 did not start off well for Colombian Miguel Ángel Borja. Despite Marcelo Gallardo's continued faith in him, the 32-year-old striker is experiencing a goal drought that deepened in the Copa Argentina, where he missed his second penalty of the year in the victory against Ciudad de Bolívar.
As Gallardo himself stated in a press conference, Borja is "disconnected from scoring," a phrase that sums up his current poor form. So far this year, the forward has played 11 matches but has only scored two goals, provided no assists, and missed two penalties, numbers far from his best at River.
His reaction after Ramiro Biscardi saved his penalty reflected his frustration. He no longer shows the decisiveness that made him the team's top scorer under Martín Demichelis, and his erratic performance in the opponent's area is a cause for concern.
Despite his poor performance, Gallardo continues to support him:
"I have to accompany him and see if it's better to take him out, put him in the second half... I must take care of my players' health," assured the coach.
With 56 goals in 120 matches, the Colombian international has been a key player for River, but his current dry spell is worrying, and the team needs him to return to his best form as soon as possible.
