Álvaro Arbeloa has etched his name into the history books of Real Madrid.
Details: According to MisterChip, Álvaro Arbeloa has become the first player developed by the club to participate in the Champions League as both a player and a coach for Los Blancos. This landmark achievement took place during the Matchday 7 Champions League clash against Monaco, where Arbeloa led the team from the technical area.
As a player, Arbeloa made his Champions League debut for Real Madrid on September 15, 2009, in a match against Zurich. Years later, he returned to Europe’s premier competition, this time on the touchline.
Looking back at the entire history of the European Cup, the closest parallel is José Antonio Camacho, who made 42 appearances as a player for Real Madrid between 1975 and 1988 and managed three matches as head coach in 2004. However, Arbeloa stands alone as the first academy graduate to achieve this feat in the club’s modern era.
As of the 10th minute, Real Madrid were already leading 1-0, with Kylian Mbappé scoring the only goal so far.
Reminder: Real Madrid fielded their youngest UEFA Champions League starting lineup in the last seven years.
