The legendary former Chelsea and England captain John Terry’s bid to break into football ownership has ended in disappointment.
Details: According to The Athletic, League Two side Colchester United have decided to end negotiations with the consortium led by 45-year-old Terry. The parties underwent a lengthy due diligence process and held detailed talks over the potential acquisition of the Essex-based club, but ultimately reached a mutual decision to halt proceedings. The deal was called off with full mutual respect and gratitude for the efforts invested.
For current Colchester owner and chairman Robbie Cowling, this marks the second failed takeover since he put the debt-ridden club up for sale in September 2025 in search of a reliable long-term owner.
It’s worth recalling that back in February this year, Cowling had already blocked a sale to another consortium—Sports Alpha Capital—which included former Brazil striker Alexandre Pato, who, for a brief time, was a teammate of Terry’s at Chelsea.
Reminder: Chelsea have identified their untouchable players for the upcoming transfer window.
