Scotland, Glasgow, Ibrox Stadium

The third-round Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and St Mirren will take place on 9 September at Ibrox. The teams are close to each other in the table, but the hosts head into the fixture after three consecutive league victories and have already recorded a convincing win over this opponent this season.

Rangers: poor start now firmly behind them

Rangers failed to win any of their first four competitive matches under Derek McInnes, but their results have improved sharply since then. The team have won five of their last six matches, with their only defeat coming against Jablonec in the second leg of Conference League qualifying.

In the Premiership, the hosts have beaten Aberdeen 1-0, Falkirk 2-1 and Motherwell 1-0 in succession. However, they will have to face St Mirren without the injured Lawrence Shankland.

St Mirren: solid start, but Rangers have already taught them a lesson

Craig McLeish's side began the league campaign with three wins and a draw from four matches. Their first defeat came only in the latest game against Celtic, when St Mirren failed to protect the lead after a goal from Nikolas Agrafiotis and eventually lost 2-1.

Overall, the visitors have won six of their 10 matches in all competitions this season. However, their League Cup meeting with Rangers already ended in a painful 5-1 defeat, and the latest trip to Ibrox promises to be no easier.

Match facts and head-to-head record

  • Rangers have won their last three Premiership matches.
  • St Mirren have suffered only one defeat in their opening five league matches.
  • Rangers have won the last three head-to-head meetings, including a 5-1 victory this season.

The hosts look stronger again: Rangers vs St Mirren prediction

St Mirren are capable of putting up resistance and have started the season well, but recent head-to-head meetings clearly favour the hosts. Rangers have improved significantly after a difficult start and now look much more consistent.

Shankland's absence slightly weakens the attack, but McInnes's side should still have enough quality at Ibrox to secure a convincing victory.
