Egyptian Sam Morsy, captain of Ipswich Town, was the only player among all 20 Premier League teams who refused to wear a rainbow-colored captain's armband in support of the LGBT+ community during the latest round of league matches, reports The Sun.
The initiative was part of the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign, aimed at eradicating discrimination in sports.
Following the incident, Ipswich Town issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity while respecting Morsy’s personal stance.
“We proudly support the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign and stand with the LGBTQ+ community in promoting equality and acceptance. At the same time, we respect the decision of our captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow captain’s armband, due to his religious beliefs,” the club stated.
In the match, Ipswich suffered a 1–0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest. The Tractor Boys are currently second-to-last in the Premier League standings, with just nine points.
