The German national team set an unwanted record after crashing out of the 2026 World Cup.
Details: Germany fell to Paraguay in the round of 16. Both regulation and extra time ended 1-1, and in the penalty shootout, the Germans lost 3-4.
According to Opta, this is the first time in history that Germany have been knocked out of a World Cup after losing a penalty shootout. Previously, the Germans had won all four of their previous shootouts at World Cups.
For Germany, this is only their second defeat on penalties at a major tournament. The previous one came back in the final of Euro 1976, when the Germans fell to Czechoslovakia—3-5.
The hero of the shootout was Paraguay's goalkeeper Orlando Gil, who saved shots from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade, while Jonathan Tah missed the target.
Reminder: Earlier, we reported that Havertz and Wirtz make the difference again at the 2026 World Cup
