Former and current Manchester United managers, Sir Alex Ferguson and Rúben Amorim, paid tribute to the victims of the 1958 Munich air disaster. A memorial service was held on Thursday outside Old Trafford to mark the anniversary of the tragedy, Daily Mail reports.

The service was attended by members of United’s men’s and women’s teams, as well as academy players. Supporters also gathered to honor those who lost their lives, while the club broadcasted the event live on its official social media channels.

The tragedy occurred on February 6, 1958, in Munich. The Manchester United team was returning from a European Cup match in Yugoslavia when their plane stopped in Germany for refueling.

During takeoff, the aircraft failed to gain altitude due to slush on the runway, crashing through a barrier and into a nearby house. The impact tore off part of the tail, and the cockpit collided with a tree.

Of the 44 people on board, 23 lost their lives, including players, staff, and journalists. Among the survivors were United legend Sir Bobby Charlton and the club’s iconic manager Sir Matt Busby, who later rebuilt the team into European champions.
