Details: Today, November 25, marks five years since the death of the legendary Argentine Diego Maradona, as well as 30 years since the passing of another icon, England’s George Best.
Maradona died in 2020 of cardiac arrest, shortly after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain. Throughout his illustrious career, he played for clubs such as Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla, and Newell’s Old Boys. In 1997, Diego announced his retirement from professional football and went on to begin his coaching career.
George Best passed away in 2005 from complications caused by years of alcohol abuse and the use of antidepressants. In 2002, George underwent a liver transplant, but his condition only deteriorated further. He was 59 years old at the time of his death. “Manchester United”: 1963–1974.
During his career, Best played for clubs including Manchester United, Stockport County, Cork Celtic, Los Angeles Aztecs, Fulham, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Hibernian, San Jose Earthquakes, Bournemouth, Brisbane Lions, and Hong Kong Rangers.
The highlights of George’s career include winning the Ballon d’Or in 1968, lifting the European Cup, and clinching two First Division titles with Manchester United.
